WORK EXPERIENCE

Legal Assistant - Publix Super Markets, Inc. - Lakeland, FL. - November 2004 to January 2015

I was one of two paralegals and we handled all General Liability suits, Fleet suits, and Class Action suits including third party subpoenas requests for Publix. I responded to discovery and handled requests for information from our outside counsel, our third party claims administrator, The Hartford, non-represented claimants, and Plaintiff's counsel. I was on different committees within Publix to help better our claims system, video retention policies, and associate driver policies. I attended depositions, mediations, and was a designated corporate representative for Publix. I would handle small claims from mediation to the final hearing without outside counsel for Publix and all of the tasks above were for five states, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Account Executive - The Alliance Companies - Lake Wales, FL. - December 2003 to August 2004

This company was a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) and I was an account executive for the states of Florida and North Carolina. I would sell worker's compensation along with payroll services to companies and agents looking for worker's compensation for their client's businesses. It was my responsibility to work the account from the beginning to the end by selling the insurance and payroll services, underwriting the account to make sure they qualified, and gathering all documentation necessary including payment for the insurance companies we were writing business for.

Auto Claims Adjuster - State Farm Insurance - Winter Haven, FL. - August 2000 to December 2003

I have an All Lines Adjuster License for the State of Florida and this was a call center handling all Florida auto claims for State Farm Insurance. It was my responsibility to take and manage calls in a timely manner while speaking with insureds, claimants, internal customers, and external customers. This included verifying the facts of the accident, reviewing and explaining the insured's auto policy to make sure there weren't any coverage issues, investigating the facts, taking recorded statements, and determining liability based on the facts of the claim. This included assignment to applicable departments for handling, setting up rental vehicles, requesting photos and estimates of damaged vehicles, reviewing the estimates for accuracy, issuing payments, and preparing the file for subrogation if applicable.

Don't Be Fooled

  • When selling, do not put your home address in your ad.
  • To avoid scams, buy and sell with people you can meet locally, in person.
  • When meeting with someone you don't know, meet in a public place. If that's not possible, have a buddy with you. Also, carry a cell phone; if you feel unsafe, you can call a trusted friend, and stay on the line.
  • Never give out financial or private information like account numbers, PayPal login, or social security number.
  • If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is. Walk away!
